What personal data we collect and for what purpose

Comments

If a visitor leaves a comment on the site, we collect the data provided in the comment form, as well as the visitor’s IP address and browser user-agent data for the purpose of spam detection.

An anonymised string created from your email address (“hash”) may be provided to the Gravatar service to determine if you are using it. Gravatar’s privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/ . Once your comment is approved, your profile image will be visible publicly in the context of your comment.

Media Files

If you are a registered user and upload photos to the site, you may want to avoid uploading images with EXIF metadata, as they may contain your GPS location. Visitors can extract this information by downloading the images from the site.

If you leave a comment on our website, you can enable your name, email address and website to be stored in a cookie. This is for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in the details again when you comment again. These cookies are stored for one year.

If you have an account on the site and log in we will set a temporary cookie to determine whether your browser supports cookies, the cookie does not contain any personal information and is deleted when you close your browser.

When you log into your account, we also set a few cookies with your login details and screen settings. Login cookies are stored for two days and screen settings cookies are stored for a year. If you select the “Remember me” option, the login data will be stored for a fortnight. When you log out of your account, your login cookies will be deleted.

When you edit or publish an article an additional cookie will be stored in your browser, it does not contain personal data and only contains the ID of the entry you edited, it expires after 1 day.

If you leave a comment, the comment itself and its metadata are stored indefinitely. This is to detect and approve subsequent comments automatically, rather than placing them in an approval queue.

For users with a registration on our site, we store the personal information they provide in their profile. All users can see, edit or delete their profile information at any time (except for their username). The website administration can also see and modify this information.
